How to communicate with your contractor during renovation
A clear scope, written decisions and regular updates make every stage of a renovation easier to manage.

A successful renovation needs decisions that everyone understands. Define the problem, available budget and responsibilities before the site opens.
Turn expectations into choices
Describe the problems before presenting preferred products. Explain how you use each room and identify the results that matter most.
Reference photographs help define a style. They do not replace technical decisions. Your contractor must check whether each idea suits the property.
A useful quotation should clearly state:
- included and excluded work;
- materials and finish levels;
- prices and payment stages;
- the estimated schedule;
- the process for unexpected work.
Keep communication simple
Name one contact on each side. A single channel prevents conflicting instructions and creates a clear record of each decision.
Arrange short updates at important stages. Approve hidden services, samples and finishes before the team completes permanent installation.
When an unexpected issue appears, ask about its cause, effect and available options. These answers support a calm, informed decision.
Confirm every change in writing
A change can affect price, timing and following trades. Approve its exact scope in writing before work begins.
The written note should record the chosen option, added cost and schedule effect. This record protects both the client and contractor.
Raise questions or concerns quickly. An early conversation costs less than corrective work after the final finish has been applied.
